Pleural Mesothelioma Cancer: Once You Are Not Protected You are Infected

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma so far and it comes about for 75% of all cases of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma affects the respiratory area of the body such as the lungs. More specifically, cancer attacks the lining of the lungs and ribs called the pleura, hence the name pleural mesothelioma.

The main cause of pleural mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. Only a few months of deadly dust and unprotected asbestos fibers can cause pleural mesothelioma thirty to fifty years later. Elderly men aged sixty to seventy are the ones most at risk for asbestos because this generation works with asbestos with little protection from dust and fiber. Because of the long latent period of pleural mesothelioma (30-50 years), these men have just discovered they have deadly cancer. Today, many of these people are filing million-dollar lawsuits against companies that expose them to asbestos. Asbestos fibers enter the lungs through inhalation and get stuck in the lungs.
Symptoms associated with pleural mesothelioma include:
  • Persistent cough,
  • Difficulty swallowing,
  • Facial swelling,
  • Weight loss,
  • Fever,
  • Hoarseness
  • Coughing up blood.

Patients may also experience shortness of breath because the tumor on the walls of the lungs expands, leaving little room for the lungs to function properly. Some patients also begin to feel severe pain in their chest and this is caused by the spread of cancer cells. Many of these symptoms are similar to diseases and conditions that are far more common than mesothelioma which means that pleural mesothelioma is often very difficult to diagnose until late.

Treatment for pleural mesothelioma is limited and there is no proper medication. Research is being carried out in laboratories throughout the United States and many pharmaceutical companies are also testing for new treatments. Treatment for pleural mesothelioma includes chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. The patient's age, medical records, weight and other factors are taken into account before treatment. Generally, the chances of survival are far more likely if pleural mesothelioma is treated aggressively at an early stage because once the cancer has developed and matured it is very difficult to cure.
